Visiting Hampton Court Palace | A Quiet Escape from London

There’s something magical about stepping into a place where history still echoes through the halls. Hampton Court Palace, nestled along the River Thames just outside London, isn’t just a historic site—it’s a full-on time-travel experience.

We spent a slow, lovely day exploring the palace, getting lost in the gardens, and imagining what life might’ve been like under Henry VIII’s watchful eye. If you’ve got a free day in London and want something a little different (and quieter!) than central attractions, this is such a good one.

How to Get to Hampton Court Palace

Getting there is easy. We hopped on a direct train from London Waterloo and arrived at Hampton Court Station in around 35 minutes. The walk from the station to the palace is short and scenic—you’ll be there before your coffee cools down.

Things to See at Hampton Court Palace

Once you arrive, prepare to be awed by the palace’s impressive architecture, featuring a harmonious blend of Tudor and Baroque styles. Be sure to allocate enough time to fully explore the palace!

Highlights we loved:

The Great Hall

Where banquets, drama, and royal politics once unfolded. Look up—the hammerbeam roof is spectacular.

The Tudor Kitchens

I didn’t expect to find this bit so interesting, but it’s fascinating to see where feasts for 600+ courtiers were prepared.

The Chapel Royal

Still a functioning church, and it’s stunning. Henry VIII’s presence really lingers here.

The Gardens & Maze

Honestly? I could’ve spent all day just here. The formal gardens are gorgeous, and yes, we did get a little lost in the Hampton Court Maze (worth it).

Dining Nearby

We walked over to The King’s Arms Hotel for lunch—it’s only about 7 minutes from the palace gates. Cosy pub vibes, hearty food, and friendly staff. Highly recommend if you want a sit-down meal that doesn’t feel too touristy. (and less crowded)

Extending Your Visit – River Cruise from Hampton Court

If you’re not in a rush, consider ending your trip with a Thames river cruise. Boats run from Hampton Court to Richmond, Kew, or even Westminster, and it’s a calm, scenic way to wind down after a day on your feet.

If you’re into castles, English history, or just need a peaceful day trip out of London, Hampton Court Palace is such a great pick. It’s immersive without being overwhelming, family-friendly, and packed with layers of stories. I’m really glad we made the time for it and I’d go back just to sit in the gardens again with a book and a coffee.
